In addition to filling the belly, however, squirrels can adopt even more altruistic attitudes. Canadian researchers have recently discovered that red squirrel females, a rather asocial species, sometimes adopt orphaned babies and take care of them as if they were children of their own. Provided however that the puppies are somehow related to them.
