Yes: the basenji is a dog that does not bark. But this does not mean that he is mute. In general, and a silent animal and its verses are very particular: they resemble those of the duck and a little … to the jodel, the typical song of Tyrol. The reason? The strange shape of his larynx.

The place of origin of this breed is central Africa (in fact also called "Congo dog" and its name in Bantu language means "indigenous"); the first specimens arrived in Europe, to be precise in the United Kingdom, in the last years of the 1800s. But the basenji, a hunting and companion animal, was already known to the ancient Egyptians in the third millennium BC C. and is in fact represented in some tombs.

How to recognize them. The females are tall, at the withers, from 38 to 41 cm and weigh from 9 to 10 kg; males, from 41 to 43 cm and from 10 to 12 kg. The colors are various (white red, white brown, brindle).
The breed is officially recognized by Enci, the Italian Cynophilia National Agency, as belonging to group 5, that is, to primitive type dogs (such as Portuguese podenco and Cirneco dell'Etna) and spitz (husky, samoyed, Italian fox etc.) ).
